I love the intersection of traditional and contemporary quilt making and letting the cloth tell the story I love the concept of time and space, and live my own version of “the uncertainty principle”. As an artist, I want to be the instrument through which the content flows.
‘These days I tell stories through fabric and art quilts’
My studio is a converted barn on our five-acre property adjacent to world heritage listed Main Range National Park in south-east Queensland. The studio is my sacred space where stories and ideas are explored through journals, thread, colour and creating cloth.
I love to print, paint, draw, stitch, overprint, discharge –I start with blank fabric on which I creative a narrative. I’m passionate about printmaking – and using found objects from my domestic space and travels to create fabrics that tell tales.
I love to write about what I do and my visual diary is as critical as breathing –it is a place to explore ideas and themes and provides nourishment for the soul. I commenced formal study in 2012 to inform and develop my creative self.
“Textures and Treasures”
an Outback Adventure in Textile Art
Textures and Treasures workshop is an opportunity to interpret a life event or memorable moment through the creation of an art quilt. The workshop comprises discussion and thinking about potential concepts, as well as significant testing of ideas, experimentation and play with mark-making techniques. Participants will develop an understanding of how a concept or idea can be translated into an art quilt.
This workshop focuses on the interpretation, through a range of experiences, of a concept or idea about life and the human condition. It may be a memorable holiday, a trip or journey, an event or life-changing moment or something fondly remembered. After forming an initial idea or concept, each of the elements will be considered in turn, beginning with the background fabric selection, piecing, additive and substrative processes, layering and texture created through stitch. Each layer offers a further or deeper perspective; a different nuance to the narrative created through the artwork.
